Scott Dixon, who won IndyCar's last oval race, looked on strong form again this afternoon as track temperatures at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. hit 125degF and Chevrolet-powered cars made their presence felt by claiming the top three times. The Chip Ganassi Racing No. 9 driver lapped the two-mile track at 217.629mph to eclipse Team Penske's top dog, Simon Pagenaud, who led a seven-car group in the 216mph bracket. Ed Carpenter, who scored his team's first win at this track back in 2012, was third fastest ahead of the first Honda-powered machine, that of AJ Foyt Racing driven by Takuma Sato.
